RELATIONSHIP STATUS WAITING ON GOD

I wanted to write this blog to all of the individuals who distinguish themselves as “single.” I want to challenge you to think far beyond that word. So many times when we hear the word “single” we put ourselves into a particular box. It’s almost as if the word SINGLE and the relationship status SINGLE seems to be some type of handicap. It’s made to believe that single individuals are incomplete, lacking, and inadequate in some way. As a result the word single has developed a negative connotation. “Oh yea…I’m STILL single.” Or “Yes, unfortunately I’m single.” Or “I can’t believe I’m still single!” I want you to know and always remember that you are far beyond being a person who is JUST SINGLE. A particular relationship status does not determine your significance in the eyesight of the Lord, nor does a particular relationship status describe the totality of who you are. Most importantly,  the relationship status of being “single” does not lessen how much God loves you.

I want you to realize that we all have to get to a place within our hearts where we stop letting our single status define ALL of who we are. We have to get to the point in our lives where we stop living in a state of waiting on a particular man or woman to come along in order for our true happiness to begin. Peace, love, and joy do not occur when we find what is commonly known as “the one,” it happens when we choose to embrace the one who has already found us. The TRUE one…GOD. Our expectation should be in God and in Him alone. Everyday we live, we need to be in a state of WAITING ON HIM. God is our ultimate expectation. Our souls should thirst for Him, His presence, His direction, His love, and His comfort.

“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” -Psalm 63:1

In NO WAY am I saying that it is wrong to desire, pray and prepare yourself to have a spouse one day. God tells His children that in everything pray and pray for it with faith (Mark 11:24). However, I want us to grow to the point of praying that God’s will may be done in our lives in ALL matters. Even when it comes to matters of our hearts and our relationships. Why? Because what if we never get the spouse that we have been praying so fervently for?  Will we deny the goodness of the Lord simply because we didn’t get what we wanted? Will God’s love and presence in our life still be enough? Will all of our hope and happiness be gone? Will our lives no longer have meaning or purpose simply because we are not married? Will we stop living and pursuing dreams just because we didn’t get the spouse we wanted? Will we no longer use our gifts and talents for God’s kingdom because we see no purpose in it if we have no spouse beside us?

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me: yet not my will, but yours be done.”-Luke 22:42

You see, these are the types of questions we have to honestly ask ourselves. As single individuals we have to be in a constant state of dependency on the Lord. We must trust and truly believe that God knows what is best for us. We must seek to develop the attitude that says, “Lord, even if you don’t give me what I want, you are STILL good and I will STILL serve you with all of me.” Remember, God’s amazing love is greater than any human being can provide. So I want to encourage you to stop living your life defining yourself by your “single status” and start defining yourself as an individual who is simply “Waiting on God.” Everyday seek to live in a constant state of waiting on Him. Put your hope and expectation in the Lord and allow Him to fill you with His peace that surpasses all understanding. Do not seek to rush ahead of His timing. Patiently wait and trust in His perfect timing.

Wait on the Lord…

“I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in His word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.” -Psalm 130:5-6
