Choosing the Better

This morning I woke up with so much on my mind. My to-do-list started to flood every single one of my thoughts. “Ashley you need to finish cleaning and putting up your clothes. You need to go running. You need to get dressed so you can go to the grocery store. You need to finish getting the birthday presents for your friends. Are you going to post a blog soon? Are you going to finish the writings you have been working on?”

The anxiety started to fill my heart. “Lord, what should I do? What do I need to do first?”

Then suddenly my internal heart and mind was halted.

Then it hit me…

“I haven’t even communed with the Lord today! I haven’t talked to Him. I haven’t allowed Him to talk to me through His word. I need God. I need communion with Him. Who cares about my to-do-list!”

So I chose God. I chose Him. I chose to study and fellowship with Him. This morning as I read scripture after scripture, I could feel my spirit being rejuvenated. My soul was SO thirsty. Thirsty for the Lord and for His word. It wasn’t until I drank from the Living Water that my soul thirst was quenched.

Tears started to well within me and I whispered….

“God thank you. Thank you for reminding me.”

I have NO idea how my day will exactly be or how it will end. All I know is I have a God that will be with me every step of the way. This morning has taught me a very valuable lesson.

Sometimes during our day, there are a lot of “good things” that have to get done or could be done. But God has not called us to simply do the good things but He has called me and you to take hold of the BETTER things…Better things with Him and of Him.

Every day I must choose better over just good. I must make “the better” my priority. Better being those spiritual things. Today communing and fellowshipping with God was the “better thing.” It doesn’t mean the good things don’t need to be done or can’t be done. It just means UNTIL I choose to do the “better thing,” I will never find peace, joy, or true pleasure in doing the good things. Oh how my heart is grateful for choosing the better.
